The best hike on the island includes walking along the floor of Kilauea Iki crater; it erupted for 36 days in 1959 sending gargantuan fountains of lava 1900 ft in the air, spewing enough lava to cover a football field 15 ft deep every minute

This is the entrance to the Thurston Lava Tube; Lee's afternoon adventure in search of other lava tubes was a little dramatic (no, search and rescue wasn't called but only because I had poor cell service LOL)

At the Puu Loa Petroglyphs ancient Hawaiians would essentially carve their family tree into the lava; each small hole represents a child

Holei Sea Arch is at the end of Chain of Craters Rd; the road (38 miles round-trip) used to go further along the coast but now dead-ends due to lava flows

The nene is critically endangered with numbers down to only 30 in 1950; they have lost the ability to fly and are not afraid of cars so they just stay in the road until they feel like moving on

There is active lava in the bottom of the crater but visitors are not allowed close enough to actually see it although there is a glow at night; parts of Crater Rim Road were closed after the 2018 eruption so it no longer circles the crater

The petroglyphs were in the middle of nowhere making me wonder how this spot was selected; on the coast near Kilauea it was hot, dry and very windy

The endangered nene is endemic to Hawaii and only found here; today there are only about 2500 left in the wild making it the world's rarest goose

The ohi'a lehua plant, a member of the myrtle family, is endemic to Hawaii and a pioneer species as one of the first to appear on new lava flows; recently a new fungus has been identified which causes rapid death to these plants

Pink knotweed made for colorful ground cover around Kilauea but is an invasive species; it thrives in almost any soil but tends to spread where it wasn't invited

Kilauea is actually several craters within a crater; we never could see all the way to the bottom where lava from the current eruption is contained

We stayed in a cute cottage in the town of Volcano (adjacent to the park); at an elevation of 4000 ft (although only 10 miles from the Pacific) it was much cooler than Kona

I visited the park quickly during my 1993 trip and remember seeing the orange lava flows from Kilauea; visitors today can't see flowing lava since the last active flow ended in 2018
