Tiny Esch sur Sure is postcard pretty Luxembourg

Esch is just one of seemingly endless tiny villages; every couple of kilometers is another town of under 1000 people and this pattern extends around the country

European countries do a great job in the summer adding flowers on bridges, lamp posts and other public spaces; you hardly see any litter in Luxembourg

Esch-sur-Sure sits on a spur of land in a meander of the River Sauer; the dilapidated castle and bucolic setting draw tourists to this town of only 314 people

The southern guardhouse for the castle is about 800 years old; it is now separated from the rest of the castle so you have to climb the hill twice

Esch has a Disney-like atmosphere with the castle ruins and the tiny village with restaurants and souvenir stores; I can see why castles were so popular because these little rivers have lots of hairpin turns

After the capture of the fortress of Luxembourg in 1684, the troops of Louis XIV began dismantling the country's strongholds; in Esch-sur-Sûre, the rampart was not destroyed because private houses were backing onto the walls

The first buildings of the castle were constructed in the Romanesque period, with more development taking place in the Gothic period; the chapel was restored in 1906

If you take this 80 meter tunnel you completely bypass Esch sur Sure; the tiny village is on a little peninsula surrounded by the shallow Sure River

I tried to use the panoramic setting on my camera so you could see both sides of the Sure River as it wraps around the town and castle

The castle declined from the mid-16th century to the mid-19th century when the castle ownership passed into the hands of the citizens who lived there

In many villages, like Esch, it's easy to get the impression that they are abandoned; there are few basic services yet some people have managed to live here

The Virgin Mary watches over Esch sur Sure and the surrounding countryside; you see lots of Audis and BMWs while the less affluent drive Peugeots, Citroens and VWs

Luxembourg has two Esch's so they are distinguished by which river they are on; it gets even more confusing because of the many languages used, ie Sauer River is the same thing as the Sure River

The first written evidence of Esch was during the third year of Charlemagne's reign in 773; in 993, Meginaud acquired the site of Esch from an abbey

I spent 4 days driving around to all of the interesting small towns in Luxembourg and didn't even use half a tank of gas

It's easier to see the different sections of the castle here; in the 15th century, the entire village was surrounded by a 450 meter wall that was 1.5 meters thick and included the watchtower in the foreground

These sure sound like Funyuns to me!; the grocery stores have huge aisles of snacks, candy, chocolate and tuna but a puny selection of cereal
